Chapter 2 - THE MAN BEHIND THE GATE

Ryan ordered Kevin to hold the gate shut.

Kevin did not move.

The calm voice had frightened him more than the sirens.

“Who was that?” he asked.

Ryan shoved the phone into his pocket.

“No one.”

The metal latch lifted from the other side.

David backed toward the porch door.

Laura knelt beside the pit and began pulling mud away from my neck.

Ryan grabbed her shoulder.

She drove the broken ceramic shard across his forearm.

He cursed and released her.

Blood darkened the sleeve of his hoodie.

Laura stared at the cut, shocked by what she had done.

Ryan stared too.

Then his face changed.

He raised the knife.

The backyard gate burst inward.

A man in a dark suit stepped through with two Texas Rangers behind him.

He was tall, gray-haired, and carried no visible weapon.

Yet Ryan stopped immediately.

The man looked at me.

His composure broke.

“Emily.”

I did not know him.

But he knew me.

One Ranger drew his weapon and ordered everyone away from the pit.

Kevin raised both hands.

David dropped to his knees before anyone asked.

Ryan kept the knife.

The gray-haired man looked at him.

“You always were slow to understand consequences.”

Ryan’s mouth opened.

“Uncle Thomas?”

Thomas Carter.

Ryan’s father’s older brother.

According to Ryan, Thomas died in a refinery accident twenty-six years earlier.

The man standing beside my grave looked very much alive.

A Ranger tackled Ryan when he moved toward the fence.

Laura and the second Ranger dug around my shoulders.

Each handful of soil removed pressure from my chest.

I could breathe beyond the straw again.

When they reached my stomach, the Ranger stopped.

“Don’t move her. We need medical support.”

Thomas knelt beside my head.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I should have come sooner.”

“Who are you to me?”

He looked toward Ryan.

“That depends on which birth certificate you believe.”

The sirens reached the driveway.

Paramedics entered through the side yard carrying equipment.

Thomas moved away while they stabilized me and checked my daughter’s heartbeat.

It was fast but present.

Ryan shouted from the ground.

“He’s lying! He’s not family!”

Thomas turned.

“I’m the only one who knows what this family did to Emily’s mother.”

Ryan’s struggle stopped.

Laura looked between them.

“Emily’s mother died.”

May you like

Thomas shook his head.

“No. She was buried alive on this property too.”
