Chapter 3 - THE FIRST PIT
At the hospital, doctors found bruised ribs, dehydration, insect bites, and dangerous pressure around my abdomen.
My daughter survived.
The contractions slowed after treatment.
Ryan, Kevin, and David were detained.
Laura was questioned separately.
Thomas remained outside my room until I agreed to see him.
He entered carrying an old photograph.
A pregnant woman stood beside the same porch where Laura watched Ryan bury me.
She had my eyes.
Her name was Grace Bennett.
My biological mother.
Thomas said Grace arrived at the Carter house thirty years earlier after marrying his younger brother, William.
William wanted sons.
Their mother, Margaret Carter, believed daughters weakened the family.
When Grace became pregnant with me, they confined her at the farmhouse.
Thomas tried to help.
He failed.
One night, William and Margaret buried Grace in a shallow pit to frighten her into signing away her child.
She escaped.
Then she disappeared.
Thomas believed she was murdered.
I had been born weeks later under a false name and adopted out.
“How did I marry Ryan?”
“Because Margaret found you.”
Ryan’s grandmother had followed my life for years.
She arranged my first job at Carter Supply.
She introduced me to Ryan.
The marriage brought the stolen daughter’s child back into the family.
Thomas believed Ryan knew only part of the plan.
Laura entered with Detective Lena Ortiz.
She handed me a memory card from the backyard camera.
The footage showed everything.
It also captured earlier conversations on the porch.
Ryan spoke about making me sign “the transfer” after I stopped fighting.
Kevin asked whether the buyer still wanted a girl.
Ryan replied, “She isn’t buying the baby. She’s buying Emily’s bloodline.”
Ortiz froze the video.
“What buyer?”
Laura looked down.
“Margaret.”
Ryan’s grandmother was still alive.
