Chapter 3 - Thirty-Seven Returned Letters

Rebecca Cole lived in a modest blue house forty minutes away.
She opened the door looking exhausted.
Then she recognized Claire.
“You’re his wife.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
Claire didn’t blame her.
“My daughter is five.”
Rebecca’s face softened slightly.
“I heard.”
“She didn’t deserve what happened.”
“No.”
“And Ryan is ten. Whatever adults did before yesterday, I need the truth.”
Rebecca studied Claire.
Then stepped aside.
Ryan was upstairs with a child advocate.
Claire felt relieved.
Rebecca led her to the kitchen.
A cardboard box sat on the table.
“This belonged to Megan.”
Claire looked at it.
Rebecca removed one envelope.
Then another.
Then another.
Thirty-seven in total.
All addressed to Daniel Bennett.
Many had the words:
RETURN TO SENDER.
Claire recognized the handwriting immediately.
Evelyn Bennett.
Daniel’s mother.
Claire opened one letter dated nine years earlier.
Megan had written:
Ryan took his first steps today.
I’m not asking for money.
I’m asking you to stop letting your mother decide whether your son exists.
Claire looked up.
“His son.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Megan never believed the test.”
“Daniel says the test was negative.”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“That piece of paper was never from the lab.”
She handed Claire a copy of correspondence from the laboratory whose logo appeared on the report.
The lab stated no final paternity report matching Daniel and Ryan’s case number existed in its records.
Claire stared at the page.
“Then who made it?”
Rebecca looked toward the envelopes.
“You tell me.”
Claire felt sick.
“Why didn’t Megan go to court?”
“She tried.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“Evelyn sent lawyers. Threats. Letters about costs. Custody. Defamation.”
“She threatened Ryan?”
“Never directly.”
Rebecca leaned closer.
“She didn’t have to.”
Claire looked back at the box.
Then Rebecca pulled out a photograph.
Daniel kneeling beside seven-year-old Ryan at a birthday party.
The same photograph Claire had seen at home.
“He told me Megan found him at his office.”
Rebecca frowned.
“No.”
Claire went still.
“What?”
“Daniel found Megan.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
Rebecca explained.
Three years earlier, Daniel had contacted Megan himself.
He said he had begun doubting the original test.
He wanted to see Ryan.
Privately.
“He told Megan he’d tell you.”
Claire whispered, “He didn’t.”
“No.”
“How long did he see Ryan?”
“Almost a year.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Then Rebecca placed one final envelope on the table.
This one had never been mailed.
On the front Megan had written:
IF DANIEL’S WIFE EVER COMES LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH.
Claire’s hand trembled as she reached for it.
Rebecca stopped her.
“There’s something else first.”
“What?”
“Megan died believing someone was still watching her.”
Claire frowned.
“Who?”
Rebecca glanced toward the window.
Before she could answer, her phone buzzed.
A security alert from Megan’s storage unit.
Rebecca opened the image.
A woman in a cream coat stood inside.
Claire knew that coat.
May you like
She had seen Evelyn Bennett wearing it dozens of times.
👉 Before Claire could even read Megan’s letter, Daniel’s mother was already inside the dead woman’s storage unit looking for something she desperately wanted destroyed.
