Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Voice on the Recording

Claire opened a recording dated three years earlier.

Daniel’s voice came through the speakers.

“I should have found you sooner.”

Megan answered.

“You should tell Claire.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“I will.”

“When?”

“I need time.”

“You’ve had years.”

“Megan…”

“Ryan thinks you’re coming back.”

“I am.”

“You said that last month.”

“I mean it this time.”

Claire clicked stop.

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel whispered, “Claire.”

She raised one hand.

“No.”

His face crumpled.

“I was going to tell you.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Exactly.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Daniel was confused.”

Claire turned toward her.

“Don’t.”

“He had a family to protect.”

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“No. He had a lie to protect.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Rebecca was crying quietly.

“My sister waited for you.”

Daniel whispered, “I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Rebecca wiped her face.

“She waited while she was sick.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

Rebecca stared at him.

“Megan was diagnosed eight months ago.”

Daniel’s face drained.

“What do you mean?”

“She had cancer.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

“She wrote to you.”

“I never got anything.”

“She sent certified mail.”

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

His mother’s face changed.

Claire noticed.

So did Rebecca.

Daniel whispered, “Mom?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Rebecca continued.

“Megan died thinking Daniel chose not to answer.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I didn’t know.”

Evelyn snapped.

“It wouldn’t have changed anything.”

Daniel turned.

“What did you say?”

“She was dying, Daniel. There was nothing you could do.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You intercepted it.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“You were finally stable.”

“You intercepted her letter.”

“I protected your family.”

Claire stood.

“You keep using that word.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because someone had to.”

Claire stepped closer.

“My family is in pieces because of you.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“No. Your family is in pieces because that boy attacked your daughter.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“He’s ten.”

“He’s dangerous.”

“He’s grieving.”

“He nearly killed Lily.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“And who called him after Megan died?”

Evelyn froze.

Claire had noticed Ryan mention an older woman.

Rebecca stared.

Daniel turned slowly.

“Mom?”

Nobody answered.

But Evelyn’s silence was enough.

👉 Claire was beginning to understand that Ryan hadn’t simply arrived angry—someone had deliberately fed that grief until he exploded inside her home.
