Chapter 6 - The Phone Call Ryan Couldn’t Forget

Claire asked to speak with Ryan only after his child advocate approved it.

Rebecca sat beside him.

Ryan looked nothing like the furious boy from the living room.

He looked small.

Tired.

Ashamed.

Claire sat across from him.

“How’s Lily?”

“She’ll recover.”

Ryan looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire waited.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

“What?”

“I thought she took everything.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Who told you that?”

Ryan wiped his eyes.

“Grandma Bennett.”

Rebecca went rigid.

Claire asked carefully:

“When did Evelyn call you?”

“The day after Mom died.”

Daniel had not answered Ryan’s calls.

Three voicemails.

No response.

Then Evelyn called.

Ryan repeated her words.

“She said Dad had a real family now.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“She said Lily was the child he wanted.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Ryan started crying harder.

“She said I needed to stop embarrassing him.”

Claire felt rage rise through her.

“What else?”

“She said Mom ruined everything.”

Ryan looked at Claire.

“I hated Lily.”

The honesty hurt.

“But she didn’t do anything.”

“No.”

Ryan’s voice broke.

“I know.”

Claire leaned forward.

“What you did was wrong.”

Ryan nodded.

“You hurt someone who never hurt you.”

“I know.”

“But the adults who lied to you were wrong too.”

Ryan stared at her.

Claire didn’t forgive him.

Not then.

That wasn’t hers to give.

Lily would decide what forgiveness meant someday.

Before Claire left, Ryan pulled a tiny key from around his neck.

“Mom gave me this.”

“What does it open?”

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca recognized the bank logo engraved on it.

A safe-deposit box.

The next day, Rebecca accessed the box as executor of Megan’s estate.

Inside were three envelopes.

One addressed to Ryan.

One containing legal papers.

And one addressed:

FOR CLAIRE BENNETT.

Claire opened it.

Megan’s first line stopped her.

Claire, if you are reading this, I’m sorry the truth entered your home before Daniel had the courage to bring it there himself.

Claire read every word.

Megan did not insult her.

She did not blame her.

Instead, she apologized that Claire had been unknowingly living inside someone else’s lie.

Then came one name.

Dr. Nathan Pierce.

Megan wrote:

He knows who created the false report.

Daniel was told he disappeared.

He didn’t.

Claire looked at Rebecca.

“Find him.”

Rebecca nodded.

It took two days.

Nathan Pierce was alive.

Retired.

Living in Arizona.

And when Claire sent him Ryan’s photograph, he called back immediately.

His first sentence was:
