Chapter 9 - Claire Stopped Protecting Daniel
That night Daniel came to Claire’s house.
He stopped on the porch.
Claire had changed the locks.
He did not ask to come inside.
“I signed the temporary custody arrangement.”
Claire took the folder.
Lily would live exclusively with her for now.
Daniel’s visits would depend on Lily’s therapist.
He had also agreed to individual counseling.
Claire looked up.
“You signed everything?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Lily shouldn’t have to protect my feelings.”
Claire thought of what Lily had told her days earlier.
Does sorry fix it?
No, sweetheart.
Then he has to fix it too.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“How’s Ryan?”
“With Rebecca.”
“Have you seen him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“His therapist said not yet.”
“And?”
“I’m listening.”
Claire nodded.
That mattered.
But it wasn’t enough.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Claire, I love you.”
She looked at him.
“I believe you.”
Hope flashed across his face.
Then she continued.
“And you still lied to me.”
His shoulders dropped.
“I know.”
“You lied because telling me the truth might cost you something.”
“I know.”
“You let your mother handle Ryan because it protected your comfort.”
“Yes.”
“You secretly met him and then abandoned him again because you were afraid your life would change.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice softened.
“Your mother is cruel.”
Daniel nodded.
“But she didn’t force you to come home every night and keep lying.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
For the first time, he said it clearly.
“That was me.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
She wished he had said that years earlier.
“I’m filing for separation.”
Daniel went pale.
“Claire…”
“I’m not deciding forever tonight.”
He breathed shakily.
“But I’m deciding now.”
She handed him the papers.
“You need to learn who you are when nobody is covering for you.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
Then nodded.
No begging.
No anger.
No manipulation.
Just consequence.
The next morning, Evelyn’s legal problems escalated.
Investigators began reviewing the forged report, the storage-unit entry, and the intercepted correspondence.
Bennett Development’s board called an emergency meeting.
Daniel attended.
Claire expected him to replace Evelyn as chairman.
Instead, he resigned.
When he returned, he told Claire:
“I spent my whole life choosing the company over people.”
She said nothing.
“I’m done.”
Then Michelle called.
Evelyn wanted a deal.
She claimed she possessed one final document.
Something even Daniel had never seen.
A second amendment to William Bennett’s trust.
Claire frowned.
“What does it change?”
Michelle answered:

“Possibly everything Ryan inherits.”
