Chapter 7 - The Email Evelyn Never Expected to Survive
Nathan Pierce joined the call by video.
Daniel sat across from Claire.
Rebecca sat beside her.
Michelle Grant, Claire’s attorney, listened carefully.
Nathan spoke slowly.
Ten years earlier, Evelyn had hired him as a private medical consultant.
“She asked how paternity testing worked.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Nathan continued.
“A few weeks later, she showed me a document claiming Daniel was excluded.”
“The negative test,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“Was it real?”
“No.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Nathan explained that the laboratory named on the report had never issued it.
He confronted Evelyn.
“She told me the matter had been privately resolved.”
“What did you do?” Michelle asked.
“I warned her.”
“About?”
“Using false medical documentation.”
Nathan paused.
“Within days, my Bennett contracts disappeared.”
“Did you keep evidence?”
“Yes.”
Claire sat straighter.
Nathan had saved emails.
One was from Evelyn.
Michelle read it aloud.
The boy cannot be legally recognized. William’s trust makes that impossible for us. Daniel believes the report. Keep it that way.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared at his mother’s words.
Claire caught one phrase.
“William’s trust?”
Daniel frowned.
“My grandfather.”
“What does Ryan have to do with it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You don’t know anything about your own family.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“You’re right.”
It was the first time he didn’t defend himself.
Michelle requested the Bennett trust records.
Daniel’s family attorney resisted.
Daniel finally ordered him to release them.
When the documents arrived, Michelle found the clause.
If Daniel had a biological descendant before age thirty, that child would receive a separate protected share of William Bennett’s holdings.

$8.4 million.
Rebecca stared at the number.
Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”
Claire leaned back.
Now she understood.
Evelyn had not merely hidden Ryan because she hated Megan.
Ryan’s legal existence threatened her control over millions.
Daniel looked sick.
“She erased my son for money.”
Claire looked at him.
“She did.”
Then added:
“And you let her make every decision because it was easier.”
Daniel flinched.
“Yes.”
Rebecca looked toward Claire.
“Can we prove Ryan is Daniel’s?”
Michelle nodded.
“We can now do an independent test.”
Daniel answered immediately.
“Do it.”
Claire studied him.
This time there was no hesitation.
But Daniel’s willingness now did not erase ten years of cowardice.
A court-supervised DNA test was scheduled.
When Evelyn learned about it, she filed an emergency petition trying to challenge Rebecca’s control over Megan’s estate.
Michelle read the filing.
“She’s panicking.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
