Chapter 1

PART 1:

Lily lay motionless in the hospital bed with gauze wrapped around her face and one eye swollen purple.

Her lips were cracked.

Her jaw was wired.

A clear tube ran into her arm.

The room smelled like disinfectant and fear.

Daniel sat beside her, holding her hand with both of his.

He had not moved in two hours.

Not when the nurse came in.

Not when the doctor adjusted the monitor.

Not when the campus officials walked through the door wearing polished shoes and empty concern.

Near the doorway, the campus officer folded his arms.

“She probably fell,” he said. “Students exaggerate these things.”

Daniel slowly lifted his head.

For one second, the room went so still that even the heart monitor sounded louder.

“My daughter can’t even speak,” Daniel said.

His voice was low.

Not loud.

Not broken.

Worse.

Controlled.

The campus officer shrugged.

“Then maybe wait before blaming people.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around Lily’s.

Lily’s fingers did not move.

On the chair beside her bed sat a clear evidence bag.

Inside was her blue hoodie, stained and torn at the sleeve.

Daniel looked at it.

Then he looked at the X-ray glowing on the light board across the room.

The doctor stepped closer and pointed to the thin white fractures across Lily’s jaw.

“Six fractures don’t come from a simple fall.”

Nobody spoke.

The campus officer’s face began to lose color.

Then the door opened.

A female detective stepped into the room carrying a laptop and a thick folder.

She looked at Daniel first.

Then at the campus officer.

“We found the campus footage,” she said. “This was an attack.”

Daniel slowly stood.

His chair scraped against the floor.

His eyes never left the campus officer.

May you like

“Then somebody knows who did it.”

👉 But the truth behind Lily’s attack started the night before, with a phone call Daniel would never forget.
