PART 8:
The investigation widened.
The campus officer who dismissed Daniel at the hospital was suspended.
The guard who watched the attack was fired and later charged with failing to report and obstruction after investigators found deleted call logs.
The head of campus security resigned.
Two administrators who had helped keep Lily’s complaint informal were placed on leave.
Grant Keller, Mason’s father, tried to call the university president.
That call became part of the investigation too.
Because he did not ask how Lily was.
He asked how fast they could “contain this.”
The word spread.
Contain.
Students printed it on posters.
They taped them outside the administration building.
You contained complaints.
You contained evidence.
You did not contain him.
Hundreds of students gathered at a candlelight vigil two weeks after the attack.
Lily could not attend.
She watched from her hospital room while Daniel held the phone.
On the screen, students stood in the cold holding blue ribbons for her hoodie.
A young woman stepped up to the microphone and said, “Lily reported him. The system failed her.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Her eyes were wet.
But she did not look ashamed anymore.
Mason’s trial took months.
His family hired expensive lawyers.
They claimed the footage was unclear.
They claimed Lily had fallen after a “verbal disagreement.”
They claimed Mason panicked.
Then the detective played the enhanced video in court.
No one moved.
Lily sat beside Daniel, her jaw healed but her voice still soft.
When the prosecutor asked if she wanted to give a statement, she stood.
Her hands shook around the paper.
Daniel rose with her, but she touched his arm.
“I can do it,” she whispered.
So he sat back down.
