Chapter 7

PART 7:

Lily woke up the next afternoon.

Her eyes opened slowly.

Daniel was beside her.

He stood immediately, leaning over the bed.

“Hey, baby girl.”

Her eyes filled when she saw him.

She tried to speak.

Pain flashed across her face.

“No,” Daniel said softly. “Don’t try. Just squeeze my hand.”

Her fingers moved.

Weak.

But there.

Daniel covered his mouth for a second.

Then he kissed her knuckles.

“I’m here.”

A tear slid down her temple.

He wiped it away with shaking fingers.

“They didn’t believe me,” she tried to mouth.

Daniel leaned closer.

“I believe you. The doctor believes you. The detective believes you. And we have the footage.”

Her eyes widened.

Fear first.

Then relief.

Then something heavier.

Shame.

Daniel knew that look.

He had seen it on people who survived things they should never have had to survive.

He leaned close so only she could hear.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Lily’s face crumpled.

“You hear me?” he whispered. “Nothing.”

She squeezed his hand again.

This time harder.

Mason Keller was arrested that evening.

News crews appeared outside campus by sunrise.

The university released a statement full of careful words.

We are cooperating.

Student safety is our highest priority.

We are deeply concerned.

Daniel read it in the hospital cafeteria and laughed once.

A dry, broken sound.

The detective sat across from him with two coffees.

“They’re trying to get ahead of it,” she said.

Daniel looked at the statement again.

“They should’ve gotten ahead of Mason.”

The detective did not argue.

Three days later, Lily was strong enough to write on a small whiteboard.

Her first message to Daniel was not about pain.

Not about Mason.

Not about court.

It was:

I told campus security.

Daniel had to sit down.

“I know,” he said.

She wrote again.

They said I misunderstood.

Daniel’s eyes burned.

“I know.”

She wrote one more line.

I started believing maybe I did.

That was the cruelty of it.

Not just the attack.

The preparation.

The dismissal.

The way powerful people made a young woman question her own fear until danger had teeth.

Daniel took the marker gently from her hand.

Then he wrote beneath her words.

You were right.

Lily stared at it for a long time.

May you like

Then she cried without making a sound.

👉 As Lily healed, the investigation spread beyond Mason — and the university’s hidden failures began falling one by one.
