Chapter 6

PART 6:

The detective called for backup.

The campus officer was told to remain in the hospital until formal questioning.

He tried to leave anyway.

Hospital security stopped him at the elevator.

By morning, the story began to unravel.

Lily had filed two complaints.

Not one.

The first was about messages.

Mason Keller had asked her out three times after a biology seminar.

She said no.

He sent texts anyway.

Then emails.

Then appeared outside her dorm.

She blocked him.

The second complaint happened after he grabbed her wrist outside the library and told her she was “making him look stupid.”

Lily went to campus security.

She asked for help.

She asked whether she could get an escort at night.

She asked if someone could tell him to stay away.

The report was never entered into the system.

Instead, a campus officer wrote an internal note:

Student may be overreacting. Avoid escalating due to donor sensitivity.

Donor sensitivity.

Daniel read those words in the detective’s folder and nearly lost his breath.

His daughter’s fear had been weighed against a donor’s comfort.

And the donor won.

Until the footage.

The attack lasted less than three minutes.

That was another thing that broke Daniel.

Three minutes was nothing.

A coffee reheating.

A song on the radio.

A father brushing his teeth before bed.

In three minutes, Mason cornered Lily, grabbed her, shoved her down the stairs, and hit her when she tried to scream.

The security guard watching from the edge of the frame did not step in until after Mason ran.

Then he called his supervisor.

Not 911.

His supervisor.

By the time city police arrived, campus security had already described it as a fall.

But they had not counted on the student maintenance camera.

It was not part of the main security network.

It had been installed temporarily after students complained about bike thefts near the service stairs.

The university forgot it existed.

A janitor remembered.

He told the detective.

May you like

That was how the truth survived.

👉 But when Lily finally woke up, the first thing she tried to say broke Daniel more than the footage did.
