Chapter 3

PART 3:

They found Lily near the service stairs behind the student center.

Not in the parking lot.

Not on the main path.

Behind the building where the security cameras faced the wrong direction.

At least, that was what campus security claimed.

At the hospital, Daniel saw what “probably fell” looked like.

Bruises on her arms.

Scrapes on her palms.

A cut near her temple.

A jaw broken in six places.

Finger-shaped marks under the sleeve of her hoodie.

A fall did not grab wrists.

A fall did not drag someone across concrete.

A fall did not leave a daughter too injured to say her father’s name.

But the university moved fast.

Too fast.

Before Lily was even out of scans, two campus officials arrived with carefully prepared language.

“We are still gathering information.”

“There is no ongoing threat to students.”

“Preliminary findings suggest an accident.”

Daniel listened until his stomach turned cold.

Then the campus officer said she probably fell.

And Daniel understood.

They were not confused.

They were protecting something.

Or someone.

Lily had not grown up with money.

Daniel raised her alone after her mother died when Lily was nine.

He worked construction.

Then night maintenance.

Then both when tuition came due.

He packed her lunches until she told him college students did not take lunches from home.

He cried in his truck after dropping her off freshman year, then lied and told her he had allergies.

Lily worked for every inch of her life.

Scholarship.

Part-time job.

Straight A’s.

No trouble.

No drugs.

No drama.

She was the girl who sent her father pictures of library sunsets and broken dorm microwaves.

She did not “exaggerate.”

She survived quietly.

That was what terrified Daniel most.

May you like

If she had been scared enough to say, “Leave me alone,” then she had already tried to avoid trouble.

👉 But when the detective opened her laptop, the hidden footage showed exactly what Lily had been trying to escape.
