Chapter 4

PART 4:

The detective opened her laptop on the small rolling table.

The campus officer shifted near the door.

“I don’t think this is the proper time,” he said.

The detective looked at him.

“I wasn’t asking.”

The doctor stepped aside.

Daniel stayed standing.

The detective turned the screen toward him.

“I want you to know we’re still verifying every angle,” she said gently. “But this footage changes the case.”

Daniel nodded once.

His hands were shaking, so he put them in his pockets.

The video began.

Grainy.

Dark.

Timestamped 11:42 p.m.

The east walkway outside the student center.

Lily appeared in her blue hoodie, phone in hand, backpack over one shoulder.

Daniel’s breath caught.

She was walking fast.

Not running.

Not yet.

A young man stepped out from behind a pillar.

Broad shoulders.

College jacket.

Baseball cap low.

Lily stopped.

The audio was not clear, but her body was.

She stepped back.

He stepped forward.

She tried to walk around him.

He grabbed her arm.

Daniel heard someone in the room whisper, “God.”

Lily pulled away.

He shoved her toward the side stairs.

Another figure appeared at the edge of the frame.

Not attacking.

Watching.

The campus officer leaned forward, his face white now.

Daniel saw it.

The attacker’s face flashed beneath the light when he turned.

The detective paused the video.

“We have an enhanced still,” she said.

She clicked once.

A photo filled the screen.

Daniel stared.

He did not know the name.

But the campus officer did.

His reaction gave him away.

His jaw clenched.

His eyes flicked to the floor.

The detective noticed.

“Recognize him?” she asked.

The campus officer swallowed.

“Hard to tell.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew.”

The officer stiffened.

“I said it’s hard to tell.”

The detective opened the folder.

“His name is Mason Keller. Junior. Lacrosse team. Son of university trustee Grant Keller.”

The room went colder.

Daniel slowly turned back to the footage.

The second figure near the edge of the frame was not a student.

It was campus security.

Not the same officer in the hospital room, but one of his department.

Standing there.

Watching Lily get dragged out of frame.

Doing nothing.

Daniel felt something inside him crack.

“My daughter called me,” he said. “I heard her tell him to leave her alone.”

The detective nodded.

May you like

“We’re retrieving your phone record. That call matters.”

👉 But one careless word from the campus officer exposed something even worse than the attack itself.
