Chapter 1

“Accidents happen. Stop being dramatic.”

The voice came through the phone speaker, cold and bored.

Audrey opened her swollen eyes to a hospital ceiling so white it hurt.

Her face throbbed.

One arm was in a cast.

A bandage pulled tight across her forehead.

Every breath felt like her ribs were remembering the crash before her mind could.

Then someone shoved a phone close to her face.

On the screen was a photo.

Dominic.

Her husband.

Standing on a yacht deck under bright blue sky, kissing another woman beside the ocean like he had never belonged to Audrey at all.

Audrey blinked once.

Then again.

The image did not disappear.

Dominic’s mother was on the call, her voice sharp through the speaker.

“Do you see it now? He has moved on. You should be grateful we’re even paying this hospital bill.”

Audrey’s fingers curled weakly against the blanket.

Dominic was somewhere on the other end too.

Silent.

Breathing.

Listening.

But not defending her.

His mother continued.

“You came into this family with nothing. No money. No name. No one to take you in. And now you expect my son to waste his life because you had a little accident?”

A little accident.

Audrey looked down at her bruised body.

At the cast.

At the IV in her hand.

At the place where the nurse had tucked the blanket around her stomach too gently.

Something inside her went cold.

She looked at the photo again.

Then slowly lowered her eyes to her belly.

Tears slid down her temples into her hair.

Her voice came out low.

Broken.

But not weak.

“You chose them.”

On the phone, Dominic finally spoke.

“Audrey, don’t start.”

That was all.

Not “Are you okay?”

Not “I’m coming.”

Not “I’m sorry.”

Just don’t start.

The doctor standing beside the bed looked at him through the phone screen with disgust she did not bother hiding.

Then she lifted a small black-and-white ultrasound photo.

Audrey saw the tiny shape.

The little curve.

The child she had planned to tell Dominic about that evening.

The child she had carried quietly for eight weeks.

The child she had waited two years for.

Audrey’s lips trembled.

A folded stack of divorce papers sat on the blanket beside her, still inside a brown envelope she had hidden in her purse before the crash.

She had not planned to use them that night.

She had only planned to be ready.

Now she placed her trembling hand on the envelope.

“Call Sophia,” she whispered.

Dominic’s mother laughed through the phone.

“Sophia? That charity lawyer friend of yours?”

The hospital room door opened.

A woman in a dark suit stepped inside, carrying an emergency legal file with red tabs down the side.

Sophia.

Her face changed the second she saw Audrey.

The bruise.

The cast.

The ultrasound.

The phone still pointed toward the bed like a weapon.

Sophia walked to Audrey’s side without greeting anyone.

Then the doctor leaned toward the phone, her voice steady and clear.

“Your wife was pregnant. And you can never father another child.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Dominic said nothing.

His mother said nothing.

Audrey closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek as Sophia placed the divorce file on the hospital bed.

And for the first time since she woke up, Audrey stopped feeling like the woman they had abandoned.

She felt like the woman they were about to answer to.

👉 Dominic thought Audrey was helpless in that hospital bed — but the truth beside her was about to destroy his entire family’s lie.
