Chapter 9

Over time, Audrey’s apartment became a home.
Not a grand estate.
Not a place built to impress donors.
Just a quiet space near the river with plants on the windowsill, soft blankets on the couch, and a lock only she controlled.
Sophia still came over often.
Sometimes with legal paperwork.
Sometimes with soup.
Sometimes with nothing but silence and two cups of tea.
Audrey began volunteering at the legal center.
At first, only behind the scenes.
Filing folders.
Organizing donations.
Writing thank-you notes.
Then one afternoon, a young woman came in with a swollen cheek, a shaking hand, and no idea what to do first.
Audrey recognized that look.
The look of someone who believed leaving required having everything figured out.
Audrey sat beside her and said gently, “You don’t have to solve your whole life today. You just have to make the first call.”
The young woman started crying.
Audrey stayed.
That was when she understood what The First Call Fund really meant.
It was not about turning pain into a perfect purpose.
Nothing about loss was perfect.
It was about making sure no woman had to wake up in a hospital bed and wonder if anyone would believe her.
It was about records.
Safety.
Lawyers.
Doctors.
Friends.
The first bridge out of fear.
Audrey still grieved.
She still had hard days.
There were mornings when sunlight felt unfair.
There were nights when the silence felt too large.
But the life she built after Dominic was real.
May you like
And unlike the estate, it did not require her to be small to stay inside it.
👉 Audrey could not undo what Dominic cost her, but she could make sure another woman’s first call was answered.
