Chapter 7

A year later, Audrey stood in a small garden behind a women’s legal center.

Sophia had asked her to attend a fundraiser.

Audrey almost said no.

Then she remembered the hospital bed.

The phone in her face.

The photo.

The voice saying, “Stop being dramatic.”

So she came.

She wore a simple blue dress.

Her scars were mostly hidden now.

The ones people could see, anyway.

When Sophia introduced her, Audrey stepped to the microphone.

For a moment, she looked at the women in the audience.

Some wealthy.

Some working-class.

Some young.

Some older.

All of them listening like they knew what it meant to be told they had nowhere to go.

Audrey took a breath.

“I used to think having nowhere to go meant you had to stay,” she said. “I was wrong. Sometimes the first place you go is not a house. It’s a phone call. A hospital record. A lawyer who believes you. A friend who refuses to let you disappear.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

Audrey continued.

“I lost something I will carry for the rest of my life. But I did not lose myself. And no woman should have to prove she is valuable before she is protected.”

The applause was quiet at first.

Then stronger.

Audrey stepped down, shaking.

Sophia hugged her carefully.

“You did it,” she whispered.

Audrey looked up at the evening sky.

For the first time in a long time, she did not feel like the girl from nowhere.

She felt like a woman who had walked through fire and found her own name waiting on the other side.

Months later, Audrey opened a fund through the legal center in memory of the child she never got to hold.

It helped injured women access emergency attorneys, temporary housing, and medical advocacy.

She did not name it after Dominic.

She did not name it after herself.

She named it The First Call Fund.

Because that was where freedom had begun.
