Chapter 8

Dominic heard about The First Call Fund through mutual acquaintances.
He sent one letter.
Audrey did not open it.
She gave it to Sophia, who returned it through legal channels with a single note:
No contact means no contact.
Audrey kept the ultrasound photo in a small wooden box by her bed.
Not as a wound.
As proof that love had existed, even briefly, inside a life that tried to crush it.
On the anniversary of the accident, she went to the river alone.
The city moved around her.
Cars crossing bridges.
People laughing outside restaurants.
Lights trembling on the water.
Audrey touched the place on her wrist where the cast had been.
Then she whispered the goodbye she had never been strong enough to say in the hospital.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep you safe.”
The wind moved softly.
And for the first time, the apology did not destroy her.
It released her.
She stood there until the sky turned dark.
Then she went home.
To her own apartment.
Her own keys.
Her own phone.
Her own life.
Dominic and his mother had thought Audrey was poor, broken, and alone.
They thought she had nowhere to go.
They were wrong.
She had the truth.
She had Sophia.
And finally, she had herself.
That night, Audrey placed the ultrasound photo back in the wooden box.
She did not hide it.
She did not stare at it until grief swallowed her.
She simply touched the lid once and breathed.
Some losses never become small.
But they can become sacred.
They can become something you carry with gentleness instead of punishment.
Audrey was learning that.
Slowly.
Day by day.
May you like
Breath by breath.
👉 Dominic tried to reach Audrey one last time, but she had already learned that healing did not require opening old doors.
