Chapter 4

When Audrey woke up in the hospital, her baby was gone.

The doctor told her gently, before the phone call.

Audrey did not remember the exact words.

Only the feeling of her hand moving to her stomach and finding emptiness where hope had been.

The driver had been Dominic’s private security man.

He had been rushing into the estate after Dominic called him in a panic.

He had been ordered to “stop her before she left.”

He did not mean to hit her.

But intent did not erase impact.

Dominic’s mother arrived at the hospital before Audrey was fully conscious.

Not to comfort her.

To control the story.

She took Audrey’s phone from the bedside table.

Called Dominic.

Put him on speaker.

Then showed Audrey the photo of him kissing the other woman.

As if betrayal was medicine.

As if humiliation would teach her not to ask for dignity.

Now Sophia stood beside the hospital bed, reading the room in seconds.

“Who authorized this call?” she asked.

Dominic’s mother scoffed through the speaker.

“I am her family.”

Sophia looked at Audrey.

“Do you want her on this call?”

Audrey opened her eyes.

“No.”

Sophia reached over and ended the call.

The room fell quiet.

Audrey stared at the blank phone screen.

For a moment, she looked so young that Sophia’s face softened.

Then Audrey whispered, “He knew.”

Sophia sat beside her.

“Knew what?”

Audrey swallowed.

“The clinic called him. He knew the transfer might have worked. He still left.”

The doctor closed her eyes briefly.

Sophia’s hand tightened around the legal file.

“Then we file everything.”

Audrey nodded.

“Everything.”

By morning, Dominic was at the hospital.

Not because he cared.

Because his family attorney had told him the situation was dangerous.

He arrived in a dark coat, hair still damp, face pale from sleepless calculation.

His mother came behind him wearing pearls and a black dress like she was attending someone else’s tragedy.

Sophia stood outside Audrey’s room with a security guard.

“No visitors,” she said.

Dominic tried to look wounded.

“She’s my wife.”

Sophia looked at the folder in her hand.

“Not for long.”

His mother stepped forward.

“This is a family matter.”

“No,” Sophia said. “It is now a legal matter, a medical matter, and possibly a criminal one.”

Dominic’s face tightened.

“That accident wasn’t my fault.”

Sophia’s eyes sharpened.

“Interesting. I didn’t say which part we were discussing.”

He stopped.

His mother touched his arm.

“Don’t speak.”
