Chapter 3

PART 3:
After that, Elena began paying attention.
Not like a suspicious mother.
Like a woman counting exits in a burning house.
She saved every strange text.
Every canceled lunch.
Every sudden excuse.
Every time Maya said, “David doesn’t like that.”
David doesn’t like me going out late.
David doesn’t like me wearing that dress.
David doesn’t like me talking about our marriage.
David doesn’t like when I make him look bad.
Then came the restaurant dinner.
Rebecca invited Elena herself.
Her voice was sweet and sharp.
“We thought it would be nice to have both families together. David wants Maya to understand what married life requires.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca chuckled.
“Guidance. Young wives need guidance.”
Elena almost refused.
Then Maya texted her.
Please come.
Two words.
That was all.
So Elena came.
Not because she wanted dinner.
Because her daughter had asked for a witness.
The restaurant was expensive, the kind of place where people whispered over steaks and pretended not to stare at celebrities.
David picked the table.
Center of the room.
Visible from every angle.
That was not an accident.
He ordered for Maya without asking her.
When she reached for bread, he touched her wrist and said softly, “You said you were watching carbs.”
Maya pulled her hand back.
Rebecca nodded approvingly.
Elena watched.
Her phone was in her purse.
Unlocked.
Emergency screen open.
Not because she expected David to attack Maya in public.
Because some part of her feared that public was exactly where he would feel safest.
Men like David trusted silence.
May you like
Rich rooms were full of it.
👉 The dinner began with poison wrapped in politeness, but one small sentence from Maya shattered David’s control.
