Chapter 6

PART 6:

The first officer looked at Maya.

Then at David.

Then at Elena’s phone still on the table with the dispatcher listening.

“Who called?”

Elena raised her hand.

“I did.”

David tried again.

“My wife and I had an argument. Her mother is overreacting.”

The woman at the next table stood.

“No, she isn’t.”

Everyone turned.

She held up her phone.

“I recorded from the moment he stood up. He grabbed her by the hair and forced her down.”

Another guest spoke.

“I saw it too.”

Then the waiter came forward.

“He’d been controlling her all night.”

The manager nodded.

“We have cameras covering this section.”

David’s confidence cracked piece by piece.

Rebecca stepped toward the officers.

“My son is a respected man. This cannot be handled like some street incident.”

One officer looked at her calmly.

“Ma’am, assault is assault.”

David’s eyes went to Maya.

The old warning was there.

The silent threat.

Fix this.

Maya felt it.

Her body remembered before her mind could fight back.

For a second, she almost said what he wanted.

It’s okay.

It was a misunderstanding.

I’m fine.

Then Elena touched the back of her hand.

Maya looked at her mother.

Elena did not speak.

She simply stayed.

That was enough.

Maya turned to the officer.

“I want to make a statement.”

David’s mouth opened.

Rebecca whispered, “You ungrateful girl.”

The officer heard it.

So did the room.

Maya stood slowly with Elena’s arm around her waist.

“My husband has been hurting me for months,” she said. “Tonight was not the first time. It was just the first time he did it where other people could see.”

David lunged forward one step.

“Stop talking.”

Both officers moved immediately.

“Sir, hands behind your back.”

David stared.

“You’re arresting me?”

“Yes.”

“For touching my wife?”

The entire restaurant seemed to inhale at once.

The officer’s face did not change.

“For assault.”

The handcuffs clicked around David’s wrists.

Rebecca gasped like she was the one being hurt.

Maya began to shake.

Not from fear this time.

From the strange, terrifying feeling of being believed.

As David was led past her, he leaned close and hissed, “You’ll regret this.”

Elena stepped forward.

May you like

“No,” she said. “You will.”

👉 That night, Maya did not go back to David’s house — and the evidence she had hidden for months finally came out.
