Chapter 4
PART 4:
The first hour was poison wrapped in politeness.
David corrected Maya’s posture.
Rebecca criticized the way Maya held her wine glass.
When Maya answered a question from Elena too honestly, David’s jaw tightened.
“She’s been emotional lately,” he said.
Maya looked down.
Elena leaned forward.
“Maya is allowed to have emotions.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Of course. But a wife should know when to control them.”
David’s hand moved to Maya’s knee under the table.
Maya flinched.
Elena saw it.
So did the waiter.
So did a woman at the next table who immediately stopped eating.
Then Maya did one small thing.
One normal thing.
She disagreed.
David told the table that Maya would be quitting her job soon because “a proper wife doesn’t need to chase a career.”
Maya’s voice shook, but she spoke.
“I’m not quitting.”
The air changed.
David turned slowly.
“What did you say?”
Maya swallowed.
“I said I’m not quitting my job. I love my job.”
Rebecca’s smile disappeared.
Elena felt her own heart start pounding.
David laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“You love embarrassing me more.”
Maya whispered, “I’m not embarrassing you.”
That was when David stood.
His chair scraped back.
Maya’s eyes widened.
“David, don’t.”
He grabbed her hair.
And the room learned what Elena had feared for months.
Now, with 911 on speaker, David finally released Maya.
She collapsed back into the chair, both hands going to her head.
Elena moved around the table and put herself between David and her daughter.
The dispatcher’s voice came again.
“Ma’am, are you in immediate danger?”
Elena kept her eyes on David.
“My daughter is injured. The man who assaulted her is still standing in front of us.”
David lifted both hands, trying to recover his performance.

👉 But the manager, the guests, and Elena’s open phone were about to make sure David could not rewrite what everyone had seen.
