Chapter 5

PART 5:
The manager stepped closer.
“Sir, step away from the table.”
David turned on him.
“Do you know who I am?”
The manager looked at Maya crying into Elena’s side.
Then at the phone.
Then at the guests filming from three different angles.
“Yes,” the manager said. “You’re the man I just watched assault a woman in my restaurant.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Rebecca stood, furious.
“This is disgusting. Elena, look what you’ve done.”
Elena looked at her.
“What I’ve done?”
Rebecca pointed at Maya.
“She provoked him. She has no discipline. David was raised to expect respect.”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“Respect is not something you beat out of a woman in public.”
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand marriage in our family.”
Maya lifted her head.
Her cheeks were wet.
Her hair was disheveled.
But her eyes were open now.
Really open.
“I do,” Maya whispered.
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice trembled, but she kept going.
“It means silence. It means smiling when he hurts me. It means apologizing when he scares me. It means pretending his control is love because his mother calls it tradition.”
David’s face went red.
“Maya.”
She flinched at his tone.
Elena reached back and took her hand.
Maya squeezed it.
Then she said the words Elena had been waiting months to hear.
“I want to leave.”
David froze.
Rebecca looked stunned, as if the thought had never occurred to her.
“You are not leaving my son,” Rebecca said.
Maya looked at her mother-in-law.
“I already did in my head.”
The police arrived before David could answer.
Two officers entered through the front, guided quickly by the manager.
The room stayed quiet.
May you like
No one wanted to be the person pretending they had not seen.
👉 When David tried to call it an argument, the witnesses in the restaurant finally stood up one by one.
