Chapter 7

PART 7:
That night, Maya went home with her mother.
Not to David’s house.
Not to the townhouse with the marble kitchen and the locked office and the closet full of clothes he approved.
Home.
To the small blue house where she had grown up.
Elena made tea.
Maya sat at the kitchen table in one of her old sweatshirts with an ice pack against her head.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I kept thinking if I was better, he’d stop.”
Elena sat across from her.
“No, baby. He wanted you smaller. That is not the same as better.”
Maya cried then.
Hard.
The kind of crying that sounds like something trapped finally found air.
Elena did not rush her.
She just held her hand across the table.
The next morning, Maya woke to seventeen missed calls from Rebecca.
Then texts.
You are destroying this family.
David didn’t mean it.
A good wife doesn’t call police.
Your mother poisoned you.
Maya stared at the messages for a long time.
Then another came in.
You will come home today.
Maya’s hands shook.
Elena walked into the room.
Maya showed her the phone.
Elena read every message.
Then she said, “Now we document.”
They filed for a protective order.
They contacted an attorney.
They gave the police the restaurant footage.
The woman from the next table sent her video.
The waiter gave a statement.
The manager turned over security recordings from the entire night.
And then Maya did something David never expected.
She opened the folder she had been hiding for months.
Photos of bruises.
Screenshots of threats.
Voice recordings of David telling her she belonged to him.
A video of Rebecca saying, “If you obeyed him the first time, he wouldn’t have to correct you.”
Elena stared at the folder, tears filling her eyes.
“Maya…”
Maya looked down.
“I was scared.”
Elena pulled her into her arms.
May you like
“You were surviving.”
👉 But once the truth entered the legal process, David’s powerful family learned the restaurant video was only the beginning.
