Chapter 1

Emma Carter stood on the steps of the Chicago courthouse with one hand resting on her pregnant belly.

The February wind cut through her coat.

Cameras flashed near the sidewalk.

Reporters waited behind the metal barriers because Daniel Carter had made sure they would be there.

He wanted an audience.

He wanted the city to see him walk into court like a winner.

Then his black car pulled up.

Daniel stepped out first in a tailored gray suit, smooth as ever, his wedding ring already gone.

Olivia stepped out after him.

Young.

Perfectly dressed.

One hand wrapped around Daniel’s arm like she had earned the place Emma had lost.

The crowd stirred.

Olivia looked straight at Emma’s belly.

Then she smiled.

“Poor thing,” Olivia said, loud enough for the nearest reporters to hear. “He finally chose someone worth standing beside.”

A few people gasped.

Daniel did not stop her.

He almost smiled.

Emma felt the words hit her, sharp and public, right above the child moving beneath her ribs.

But she did not cry.

She lifted her chin and looked at her husband.

The man who had once slept on the floor beside her during their first year because they could not afford both rent and office space.

The man who had held her hand outside investor meetings and whispered,

“Your name opens doors. My job is to make sure we walk through them together.”

Now he stood in front of the courthouse with his mistress, letting her laugh at his pregnant wife.

Emma’s voice came out calm.

Cold.

“Then why is he still standing on my name?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Olivia’s grip loosened slightly.

Emma opened her purse and pulled out a sealed legal envelope.

The old paper inside was worn at the edges.

But the signatures were clear.

Daniel’s signature was at the bottom.

Emma held it up just enough for him to see.

“You signed away the company before you betrayed me,” she said.

Daniel went still.

For the first time that morning, he looked afraid.

👉 But Daniel’s fear only deepened when Emma’s attorney stepped out and revealed this was no longer just a divorce.
