Daniel had forgotten because Daniel forgot every promise once it stopped benefiting him.
But Emma had not.
In year three of the company, Daniel had nearly destroyed them with a secret loan.
He had taken money from a private investor without board approval, using future company assets as collateral.
When the deal collapsed, Carter Urban Development was days away from losing everything.
Emma fixed it.
Not with tears.
With paperwork.
She used her family trust to pay off the emergency debt.
But her attorney demanded protection.
Daniel signed a restructuring agreement transferring his voting shares and founder rights into Emma’s holding company if he ever committed financial misconduct, concealed company assets, or used corporate funds for personal benefit.
At the time, Daniel signed fast.
He needed saving.
He kissed Emma afterward and said,
“You know I’d never betray you like that.”
Emma believed him.
That was her mistake.
Keeping the document was not.
By the morning of the courthouse hearing, Emma had more than the old agreement.
She had hotel receipts charged to business development.
Jewelry purchases listed as client gifts.
Wire transfers to a shell consulting account tied to Olivia.
Deleted emails recovered by the company’s forensic accountant.
A draft press statement Daniel had prepared accusing Emma of mental instability.
And one recorded board call where Daniel told a finance officer,
“Move the money before the divorce freezes it. She’s too pregnant to catch us.”
That sentence changed everything.
This was not just cheating.
This was fraud.
Outside the courthouse, Daniel took one step toward Emma.
“Put that away,” he said through his teeth.
Emma did not move.
Reporters leaned closer.
Olivia looked from Daniel to the envelope.
“Daniel?”
He snapped,
“Not now.”
Emma’s attorney opened the thick folder.
“Ms. Carter filed amended pleadings this morning,” she said. “Fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, concealment of assets, misuse of company funds, and attempted dissipation of marital property.”
Daniel tried to laugh.
It sounded thin.
“This is a divorce tactic.”
Emma’s attorney looked at the cameras.
