Chapter 2

Olivia frowned.
“What is she talking about?”
Before Daniel could answer, the courthouse doors opened behind Emma.
Her attorney stepped out carrying a thick folder of documents.
She stood beside Emma, looked directly at Daniel, then at Olivia.
“Mr. Carter,” she said, “this is no longer just a divorce. It’s a fraud case.”
Olivia’s hand slipped off Daniel’s arm.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
The cameras flashed again.
This time, not for the image he had staged.
For the one he could not control.
Six years earlier, Daniel Carter had been nobody with a good suit and a desperate pitch.
Emma was the daughter of a well-known Chicago real estate family, but she had never been spoiled the way Daniel later claimed.
Her father had died when she was twenty-three, leaving behind debt, property disputes, and a name people respected but banks no longer trusted.
Emma worked two jobs while finishing business school.
She learned contracts because she had to.
She learned people because contracts were useless if you trusted the wrong ones.
Then she met Daniel.
He was charming.
Hungry.
Brilliant in a room full of investors.
He made people believe.
Emma had the structure.
Daniel had the voice.
Together, they built Carter Urban Development from one borrowed conference room into a company that bought and restored abandoned buildings across the city.
For the first two years, they were a team.
Emma handled financing, zoning, and partnerships.
Daniel handled presentations and press.
He called her his backbone.
His compass.
His only real family.
Then money came.
Then magazines.
Then board dinners where people congratulated Daniel while Emma stood beside him, seven months pregnant, smiling through exhaustion.
Somewhere along the way, Daniel started believing the story he told on stage.
That he had built it alone.
That Emma was lucky to be near him.
May you like
That her family name belonged to him now.
👉 But when Olivia entered the company, Daniel started erasing Emma from more than just his marriage.
