Chapter 14 - THE FIRST SARAH

My birth records were incomplete.

Independent investigation showed Sarah Mitchell was a name assigned by a military family-placement program.

My biological mother was Helen Reed.

Daniel’s aunt.

That made Daniel and me biologically related through a distant family line neither of us knew.

The program had selected our careers and eventual marriage because our combined profiles produced strong search-and-rescue aptitude.

We had been studied long before the mountain.

The revelation did not make our choices unreal.

It made the manipulation older.

Another woman had originally carried the Sarah Mitchell identity.

She died in childhood.

I was placed into her records.

A continuity child.

My entire legal life had begun as a replacement.

I did not lose myself.

Identity was more than the first document.

Courts restored the original girl’s history and preserved mine without erasing either.

Hale, Ashbourne, Tyler, contractors, and officers faced convictions and military consequences.

Ryan received a serious sentence for assault and conspiracy, reduced by cooperation but not erased.

Luke chose limited contact with him.

Nguyen continued service and avoided publicity.

Daniel and I rebuilt our marriage slowly.

Natsu retired for real.

No cameras.

No demonstrations.

Then, on the tenth anniversary of the mess-hall assault, a stainless steel tray appeared on our porch.

Beside it lay a faded red tactical collar.

Read Chapter 15 to discover who was waiting inside the empty mess hall.
