Chapter 4 - THE MAN IN THE CART

Daniel had escaped from a medical program that reconstructed memories through repetition, medication, and forged records.

No science-fiction mind control.

Systematic confusion.

He had been shown videos of me dying.

He had been told Natsu attacked the rescue team.

He had signed statements he did not remember reading.

When he escaped, he did not know which memories were his.

He came to the mess hall because an anonymous message promised Natsu would identify him.

The dog approached.

Sniffed Daniel’s hands.

His face.

The scar beneath his left ear.

Then Natsu sat.

Our old rescue confirmation.

Daniel began crying.

Not loudly.

His hand rested on the dog’s head.

“Good boy.”

Natsu had found him beneath snow, prisons, and false records.

But one fact remained.

Daniel carried a small transmitter beneath his skin.

Hale had tracked him to us.

We removed it under field conditions and placed it inside Ryan’s abandoned phone.

The false police followed the signal toward the parking lot.

That created an escape route.

Actual military investigators arrived after Nguyen reached an independent command channel.

The mess hall became a crime scene.

Ryan was detained.

He demanded protection in exchange for cooperation.

He received counsel, not immunity.

Then Daniel gave investigators the prisoner ledger code.

The first name on the current list was Luke Miller.

Ryan’s brother.
