Chapter 13 - THE RETURN TO O’HARE

Ashbourne stood beyond the locked boarding door with a sealed military folder.

She demanded Lily and Owen’s paired biometric keys.

We brought no children.

Independent teams surrounded the gate.

She said the archive contained every original family identity, including mine and Hayes’s.

We refused private exchange.

She opened the folder remotely.

Screens across the terminal showed birth records, adoptions, and false deaths.

Some true.

Some synthetic.

Chaos was the weapon.

Ashbourne stepped into the terminal wearing no disguise.

She said Safe Harbor was inevitable because governments would always choose secrets over families.

I answered, “Only if everyone accepts that choice.”

Airport police arrested her.

Then the boarding door slammed behind us.

Three knocks sounded from the jet bridge.

The same pattern.

A child’s voice called:

“Colonel Steel?”

Lily’s voice.

She was under protection miles away.

The door opened.

A five-year-old girl stood there wearing Lily’s green dress.

Another replacement.

Behind her waited dozens of children dressed as passengers.

Safe Harbor’s final class.

Ashbourne had used her own arrest to bring them into public custody.

Was it surrender?

Or the next transfer?
