Chapter 2 - THE OTHER CHILDREN

Airport police opened the service corridor.

Nobody stood behind the door.

Only a phone taped beneath the handle and a speaker playing the recorded voice.

The corridor led toward baggage operations.

Security footage showed a man in an airline maintenance uniform entering ten minutes earlier.

His face was hidden.

The tracker inside Owen’s teddy bear continued transmitting.

Major Hayes isolated it inside a signal bag.

Then the aircraft captain reported a disturbance in first class.

The stepmother was arguing with a man who insisted she had delivered “the wrong pair.”

Airport police boarded.

They removed her and three passengers.

One passenger carried photographs of Lily and Owen.

Another held two child passports bearing the twins’ faces but different names.

Grace and Noah Bennett.

Same birthdays.

Different parents.

The woman in the beige coat identified herself as Vanessa Cole.

She admitted the children’s father, Captain Michael Carter, married her six months earlier.

Michael supposedly died during a classified training accident.

Vanessa claimed his military lawyer told her the twins would enter government guardianship.

A man paid her to leave them at Gate 17.

She accepted twenty thousand dollars.

She called it compensation.

I called it abandonment.

Then police searched the aircraft.

Two other five-year-old children sat in the rear row with a male escort.

Same blond curls.

Similar faces.

The passports identified them as Lily and Owen Carter.

DNA later proved they were unrelated.

Trained replacements.

Someone planned to switch the children after security and move the real twins under new names.

The gate incident disrupted the transfer.

Then the male escort recognized me.

“Colonel Steel,” he said, “Captain Carter told us you would interfere.”

I had not spoken with Michael Carter in six years.

He disappeared after accusing our unit of operating a hidden family-relocation program.

The Army declared him dead last week.

Now evidence suggested he had predicted my presence at O’Hare.

Then Lily reached into my jacket pocket.

She pulled out a folded photograph I had never seen before.

It showed me standing beside her father in Afghanistan.

On the back, Michael had written:

May you like

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, DANIEL IS THEIR GUARDIAN.

The date was three years before the twins were born.
