Chapter 17 - THE TRIALS
The legal process lasted fourteen months.
Brooke initially denied everything.
Then investigators recovered deleted messages between her and Evan.
They discussed the forged letters.
The donation campaign.
The plan to secure a Vance Capital board seat.
One message called Arthur “the door.”
Another described Victoria as “easy if flattered.”
Charles was “desperate.”
I was “the soldier who never checks the house.”
Brooke had underestimated me because Arthur had.
She pleaded guilty to wire fraud, theft, document falsification and conspiracy.
Evan received a longer sentence for managing the financial network.
Their properties were seized.
Most donor money was recovered.
Charles pleaded guilty to fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and obstruction.
Vance Capital entered court-supervised restructuring.
Independent administrators protected employee pensions.
Victoria avoided prison but lost charitable appointments, board positions and much of her personal wealth through restitution.
Arthur was not charged with Brooke’s primary scheme.
There was insufficient proof that he knew her property claims were false.
But he remained liable for corporate documents he had signed.
He cooperated with prosecutors and surrendered his company position.
The divorce court reviewed the hospital recording and the false statements in his petition.
I received primary physical custody.
Arthur began with supervised visitation.
The judge told him:
“Parenthood requires demonstrated judgment, not merely biology.”
Our divorce became final on a rainy Tuesday.
Outside the courthouse, Arthur said:
“I’m sorry.”
May you like
I believed he meant it.
But sincerity did not restore trust.
