Chapter 9 - THE PAPERS HE NEVER READ
Jonathan asked Arthur for the divorce envelope.
He removed the financial declaration attached to the petition.
“Did you review this before signing?”
“My lawyer prepared it.”
“That was not my question.”
Arthur looked down.
“No.”
The declaration described me as a part-time consultant with limited income.
It stated I owned no significant property.
It claimed Arthur was the twins’ primary financial provider.
Every statement was false.
“My military compensation appeared on our tax returns,” I said.
“I don’t prepare the taxes.”
“You signed them.”
Jonathan continued.
“Sterling Strategic was listed in the prenuptial agreement.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“I told you I never read it.”
“You signed that too.”
The petition also requested primary custody of the twins and exclusive use of the estate as their main residence.
Arthur looked at Brooke.
She had told him that registering the children at the mansion would strengthen his legal claim.
“You planned to use our newborns to claim a house you did not own,” I said.
“I wanted custody.”
“You left them in the hospital.”
“I was handling a crisis.”
“You were celebrating with your mistress.”
Arthur looked at my uniform.
“What do you actually do in the Army?”
General Grayson answered.
“Colonel Sterling directed the Kandar evacuation after the primary command network failed. Twenty-seven personnel came home because she took control.”
Arthur looked at me.
“You never told me.”
“I invited you to the medal ceremony.”
