Chapter 10 - The Birthday Empire Collapses

Victor’s first action was not public.

He suspended Maris’s access to every family account under his authority.

He removed Leonard from all company matters.

He ordered independent audits of the trust, support account, and companies tied to the waterfront estate.

Then he contacted the hotel.

The birthday celebration ended without the final speech.

Guests left in stunned silence.

Some avoided Maris.

Others asked direct questions.

The man who filmed the confrontation preserved the video but agreed not to publish Annie’s face.

The blonde guest, Caroline, approached Victor before leaving.

“I saw Maris take Annie toward the service corridor.”

Victor looked at her.

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

Caroline began crying.

“I thought Annie was someone’s child who wandered in. Maris said she was handling it.”

The explanation was painfully familiar.

Everyone believed Maris because she spoke with confidence.

Caroline agreed to give a statement.

So did the kitchen employee who heard Annie say she was hungry.

So did Mrs. Dalton.

By midnight, Maris had lost control of the story.

She called Victor repeatedly.

He did not answer.

She arrived at his house.

Security denied her entry.

She went to his office.

Her access card no longer worked.

For the first time in decades, doors closed against Maris.

She left voice messages.

“You are humiliating me.”

“This family will collapse without me.”

“Catherine poisoned you.”

Victor saved every message.

One included a direct threat.

If you bring that woman back, I will make sure Annie receives nothing.

The threat confirmed Maris still viewed the child’s trust as leverage.

Victor’s investigators traced more transfers.

Money intended for Annie had paid for Maris’s estate, jewelry, private club fees, and part of the birthday party itself.

The celebration where Annie ate discarded cake had been funded with Annie’s stolen money.

When Victor learned that, he removed the crushed bread from the pocket of his suit jacket.

He had wrapped it in a napkin after Annie finally released it.

He stared at it for a long time.

Then he placed it beside the audit report.

No number could explain what his daughter had experienced.

But every number could help prove who caused it.

The next morning, Annie asked him one question.

“Are you going away again?”

Victor knelt in front of her.

“No.”

“Even if Grandma gets mad?”

“Especially then.”

Annie watched him carefully.

Then she placed her small hand in his.

👉 Annie slowly began trusting her father—but Catherine still feared that Victor would eventually choose Maris again.
