Chapter 13 - Catherine Walks Into the Room

Catherine returned to Maryland three months after the birthday party.

Her surgery had been successful.

She was still thin.

Still cautious.

But she walked into the mediation room without assistance.

Victor stood when she entered.

Annie ran past him.

“Mom!”

Catherine dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Victor turned away to give them privacy.

Then Annie pulled him closer.

“Dad too.”

Victor looked at Catherine.

She gave one small nod.

He knelt beside them.

The three did not become a family again in that instant.

They became three people acknowledging that the love between them had survived someone else’s lies.

Maris entered through a separate door with her new attorney.

Her silver hair was perfectly styled.

Her posture remained proud.

But she no longer wore pearls.

Catherine stood.

Maris looked at Annie.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Annie immediately moved behind Victor.

The reaction was automatic.

Everyone saw it.

Maris’s smile collapsed.

“You have filled her head with stories.”

Catherine answered, “She remembers what you did.”

“I protected this family from you.”

“You stole from a child.”

“I maintained assets Victor would have wasted supporting your instability.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Catherine remained calm.

“You mean my illness?”

“I mean your inability to understand our world.”

Catherine placed her original letter on the table.

“I understood enough to know you were committing fraud.”

Maris turned toward Victor.

“You would choose her after she ran away?”

Victor answered, “She did not run from me. You removed every road back.”

Maris’s eyes hardened.

“I made you successful.”

“You made me dependent on your judgment.”

“You owe me everything.”

“No.”

Victor looked at Annie.

“I owe her the years I failed to fight harder.”

Maris struck the table with her palm.

“She would have had nothing if I had not protected the family fortune.”

Annie whispered, “I was hungry.”

The room became silent.

Maris looked at her granddaughter.

For once, she had no polished answer.

Catherine slid photographs across the table.

Temporary housing.

Medical bills.

Overdue notices.

Annie sleeping in a coat during winter because the heat had been shut off.

“This,” Catherine said, “is what your protection looked like.”

Maris pushed the photographs away.

That single movement ended any possibility that her actions came from misguided love.

👉 Maris still refused responsibility—but Leonard’s decision to cooperate left her with no one willing to protect the lie.
