Chapter 8 - The Woman Maris Could Never Control
Maris disliked Catherine from the first dinner.
Catherine was a public-school teacher.
She came from an ordinary family.
She wore a simple blue dress and challenged Victor when he interrupted her.
Maris called her “unpolished.”
Victor fell in love with her anyway.
After the wedding, Catherine refused to let Maris control their home.
She chose Annie’s school.
She rejected the nanny Maris selected.
She declined invitations when Annie was sick.
Every boundary felt like an insult to Maris.
The conflict deepened after Victor’s father died.
His will placed a large portion of family assets under Victor’s control.
Maris retained wealth but lost authority.
Then Annie was born.
The trust created for future grandchildren became active.
Victor was traveling constantly.
Maris offered to handle the administration.
Catherine objected.
“No one handles Annie’s money without both parents reviewing it.”
Maris smiled.
“You teach third grade. You do not understand complex assets.”
Catherine hired an independent accountant.
That accountant found loans, unexplained transfers, and fees paid to companies Maris controlled.
Before he could complete the report, he withdrew from the engagement.
Maris had threatened his licensing status through Leonard.
Catherine kept copies of his preliminary findings.
That was what she tried to send Victor.
Maris did not simply want Catherine gone.
She needed the evidence gone.
Brian remembered driving Maris to Catherine’s house two weeks after she left.
Catherine refused to open the door.
Maris shouted from the porch.
“You will never see Victor again unless you surrender those records.”
Annie had been four years old.
She heard every word.
That was why she feared her grandmother.
Victor listened as Brian described the visit.
His shame became rage.
“You knew this happened.”
Brian lowered his head.
“Yes.”
“And you drove away.”
“Yes.”
Victor’s voice turned cold.
“Why should I believe you now?”
Brian’s eyes filled.
“You should not forgive me. But the documents are real.”
Victor looked at Annie.
The child watched Brian carefully.
“He brought Mom groceries,” she whispered.
Brian covered his mouth.
After contacting Catherine, he had secretly delivered food and medication.
It did not erase his silence.
But it explained why Annie recognized him without fear.
Maris heard this from the ballroom doorway.
“You gave them my money?”
Brian turned.
“It was Victor’s money.”
Maris’s face hardened.
“No. Everything in this family exists because I protected it.”
