Chapter 11 - The First Call in Three Years

Catherine called from a blocked number two days later.
Victor sat alone in his office.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Catherine said, “Is Annie really with you?”
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes. She’s staying with Mrs. Dalton until you decide what you want.”
Catherine began crying.
Victor closed his eyes.
“I am so sorry.”
“Do not start there.”
He stopped.
Catherine’s voice was weak but firm.
“Sorry is not the same as understanding.”
“You’re right.”
“You believed a typed letter over everything you knew about me.”
“I did.”
“You let your mother control every path between us.”
“I did.”
“You sent money instead of coming yourself.”
Victor swallowed.
“Yes.”
Catherine breathed slowly.
“I was sick for months before Brian found us.”
“What is wrong?”
“I need surgery.”
Victor gripped the desk.
“I can arrange—”
“No.”
He stopped again.
“I will not trade access to Annie for medical help.”
“I would never ask that.”
“Your family turned every gift into control.”
Victor understood.
“Tell me what would make you feel safe.”
“A doctor chosen by me. Bills handled through an independent attorney. No direct payment to me. No condition involving you or Annie.”
“Yes.”
“And Maris cannot know where I am.”
“She won’t.”
Catherine remained silent.
Then she asked, “What did Annie tell you?”
“Enough to know I failed her.”
“She still loves you.”
Victor’s eyes filled.
“I don’t deserve that.”
“She is eight. She should not have to decide what you deserve.”
The words cut deeply.
Catherine agreed to let Victor speak with her attorney.
She did not reveal her location.
She was not ready to see him.
Victor respected the boundary.
Through an independent medical trust, he funded Catherine’s care without controlling the hospital, physician, or schedule.
The surgery was arranged.
Annie spoke to her mother by video that evening.
Victor stayed outside the room.
He heard Annie laugh for the first time since the ballroom.
Later, she opened the door.
“Mom says you can say hi.”
Victor stepped into view.
Catherine appeared on the screen.
She looked pale and tired.
But alive.
Their eyes met.
No dramatic reunion occurred.
No instant forgiveness.
Only a long silence filled with three stolen years.
Then Catherine said, “Thank you for listening this time.”

Victor answered, “I should have listened the first time.”
👉 Catherine allowed Victor one careful step back into their lives—while the audit uncovered the full structure of Maris’s betrayal.
