Chapter 1 - The Bride Who Didn’t Flinch

Gregory planted his left foot and swung the aluminum baseball bat toward his bride’s ribs.

“Get on your knees.”

Ashlynn did not scream.

Her white bouquet dropped onto the rose-covered carpet as she stepped diagonally inside the strike. The bat missed her lace dress by inches.

Her left forearm trapped Gregory’s elbow.

Her right hand locked around his wrist.

The smug rage on his face vanished.

Ashlynn rotated her hips, forced his wrist downward, and tore the bat from his hands in one clean motion.

Gregory stumbled forward.

He reached for her.

Ashlynn planted her heel and drove one controlled front kick into his upper chest.

He crashed against the honeymoon bed. The mattress folded beneath him, sending red rose petals across the floor.

Ashlynn remained standing.

Her breathing was calm.

The bat rested securely in both hands.

“You should’ve checked my file,” she said.

Gregory pushed himself onto one knee.

“What file?”

Ashlynn turned the bat once in her palms and caught it without looking down.

“The one they sealed.”

The ocean moved beyond the suite’s floor-to-ceiling windows. Red and gold honeymoon balloons swayed near the curtains.

Gregory stared at her balanced stance.

At her scarred knuckles.

At the cold focus in the eyes of the woman he had married less than twelve hours earlier.

He had expected fear.

He had expected obedience.

Instead, Ashlynn stood between him and the locked cabin door like she had spent years preparing for this exact moment.

“Who are you?” he whispered.

Ashlynn did not answer.

She looked at the bat.

Then at the open leather suitcase beside the bed.

Inside it, beneath Gregory’s folded shirts, she had seen the photograph that changed everything.

It showed Gregory’s father standing beside three armed men at a military airfield.

Ashlynn was in the photograph too.

And according to the date stamped on the back, it had been taken two years after the world was told she had died.

👉 Gregory believed the attack would frighten his bride into submission—but Ashlynn had entered the marriage searching for the man who erased her life.
