Chapter 5 - The Father at the Door

The cabin door opened six inches.
A broad man in a dark suit appeared in the gap.
He wore an earpiece and kept one hand near his jacket.
“Mr. Mercer, step away from her.”
Gregory gripped the bat.
Ashlynn stood slightly behind him, appearing vulnerable.
The guard pushed the door wider.
Then William Mercer came into view.
He was sixty-five, silver-haired, and thinner than the photographs shown at his memorial service.
But he was unmistakable.
Gregory’s hands began to shake.
“Dad.”
William smiled.
“My son.”
Gregory looked at him as if seeing a ghost.
“You let us bury you.”
“It was necessary.”
“For whom?”
“For the family.”
William’s gaze moved toward Ashlynn.
Recognition appeared immediately.
“Sergeant Cole.”
Gregory turned.
“Cole?”
Ashlynn’s civilian surname was Hale.
William had used the name buried inside her sealed service record.
Ashlynn stepped forward.
“You remember me.”
“I remember every soldier who disappointed me.”
“You mean every witness you couldn’t control.”
William’s smile remained.
He looked at Gregory.
“Your wife is dangerous.”
“She said you framed her.”
“She has spent years inventing conspiracies to explain her failures.”
Ashlynn reached toward the champagne table.
The guard raised his hand.
“Don’t move.”
Gregory positioned himself between them.
William noticed.
His expression cooled.
“Put down the bat.”
Gregory did not.
“Did you tell Mom to make me attack her?”
“I told your mother Ashlynn posed a threat.”
“You planted this weapon.”
William glanced at the bat.
“That belonged to my father. I hoped holding it would remind you what kind of man you are.”
Gregory looked sick.
William extended a hand.
“Come outside. We can resolve this quietly.”
“What happens to Ashlynn?”
“She will receive medical care.”
Ashlynn almost laughed.
That was the same phrase William used before ordering her transported to an unlisted detention facility eight years earlier.
Gregory heard the contempt in her breath.
“What kind of medical care?” he asked.
William’s patience disappeared.
“The kind appropriate for a woman who attacked her husband during a psychological episode.”
The plan became clear.
Gregory’s assault would be reversed.
Ashlynn would be accused of attacking him.
Her sealed military history would be used to label her unstable and dangerous.
William would take the evidence.
Gregory would become the grieving husband of a wife who suffered a breakdown on their honeymoon.
William looked at his son.
“Open the way.”
Gregory lowered the bat.
Ashlynn’s stomach tightened.
Then Gregory suddenly slammed the cabin door into the guard’s shoulder and drove the bat through the interior handle.
The metal shaft jammed the door shut.
William’s face vanished behind it.
Gregory turned to Ashlynn.
“I’m not opening it again.”
The cabin speaker crackled.
William’s voice became cold.

“Then the ship will never reach port.”
👉 Gregory had finally defied his father—but William Mercer controlled far more than one locked suite.
