Chapter 13 - The Mother’s Last Choice

The bridge doors opened.
Margaret Mercer entered with two armed guards.
Gregory turned toward her.
“Mom.”
She looked at William restrained on the floor.
Then at the upload screen.
Ninety-two percent.
One guard raised his weapon toward Logan.
Margaret said, “Lower it.”
The guard hesitated.
William shouted, “Shoot him!”
Margaret looked at her husband.
For thirty-five years, she had obeyed him.
She had hidden his crimes.
Faked his death.
Manipulated their son.
Helped isolate Ashlynn.
She had told herself every crime protected the family.
Now William was willing to sacrifice Gregory with everyone else aboard the ship.
Margaret stepped toward the communications console.
Ashlynn moved between them.
“What are you doing?”
“Finishing what I should have done years ago.”
Margaret removed a ring from her finger.
Inside the band was a miniature encryption chip.
William’s private authorization key.
She gave it to Logan.
“This opens the protected accounts.”
William’s face twisted.
“Margaret.”
She did not look at him.
“I watched you turn our son into a man who believed love meant ownership.”
“You helped me.”
“Yes.”
The admission silenced everyone.
Margaret faced Gregory.
“I will not ask you to forgive me.”
Gregory’s voice was hollow.
“Did you ever love me?”
“More than I knew how to protect you.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No,” she whispered. “It isn’t.”
One of the guards lowered his weapon.
The other remained loyal to William.
He aimed at the communications station.
Margaret stepped into his line of fire.
“Move,” he ordered.
“No.”
William shouted again.
The guard’s hand tightened.
Gregory lunged.
Ashlynn struck the weapon aside with the bat as Gregory drove the guard into the wall.
The shot discharged into the ceiling.
No one was hit.
The loyal guard dropped the weapon.
The captain’s officers restrained him.
Logan inserted Margaret’s encryption key.
The screen changed.
Hidden accounts opened across dozens of jurisdictions.
The transmission progress jumped.
Ninety-six percent.
William struggled against the restraints.
“If that reaches the public network, governments will fall.”
Ashlynn looked at him.
“Only the ones you bought.”
The Navy vessel appeared beyond the windows.
A secure channel opened.
“Cruise vessel, identify your status.”
The captain answered.
“We are under unlawful control. Threat signal was fraudulent. Request immediate assistance.”
The transmission reached ninety-nine percent.
Then the bridge lost power.
Every screen went dark.
Emergency lights returned.
Logan struck the keyboard.
“The engine-room team cut the main system.”
Ashlynn looked at William.
His smile returned.

“You were one second too late.”
