Chapter 7 - The Brother She Protected

Ashlynn stared at the message.

Her brother’s name was Logan Cole.

He had been twenty-two during the failed mission.

A new Marine.

Idealistic.

Terrified of disappointing her.

William threatened to charge Logan with leaking classified coordinates unless Ashlynn confessed.

She signed the papers to protect him.

Afterward, Logan disappeared from her life.

Ashlynn believed the military relocated him.

Now his encryption key was communicating through William’s private satellite network.

Another message appeared.

DON’T TRANSMIT. PEOPLE WILL DIE.

Gregory kept his weight against the bat wedged through the door handle.

“Could someone copy his access code?”

“No.”

“Then he’s alive.”

“Yes.”

“And he works for my father.”

Ashlynn typed one question.

WHERE ARE YOU?

The answer arrived seconds later.

ON THE BRIDGE.

Gregory looked toward the ceiling as if he could see through the ship.

“He’s controlling the route.”

Ashlynn typed again.

WHY?

The response took longer.

BECAUSE THE SHIPMENT WASN’T WHAT YOU THOUGHT.

Ashlynn’s pulse quickened.

The mission report claimed Mercer Maritime transported illegal weapons.

Her surviving evidence supported that conclusion.

But William never admitted what was inside the sealed containers.

Logan sent another message.

THEY WERE PEOPLE.

Ashlynn stopped breathing.

Gregory looked over her shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

The door shook violently.

The bat bent slightly against the handle but held.

A final message appeared.

TRAFFICKED WITNESSES. CHILDREN. FAMILIES.

Ashlynn felt the room narrow.

William had not merely moved equipment.

He transported human beings through military-protected shipping routes.

Witnesses who knew about illegal operations.

Families used as leverage.

Children whose identities disappeared inside falsified immigration records.

The three Marines from Ashlynn’s unit had discovered them.

That was why they never returned.

Gregory looked at the photograph again.

“Were those men alive after the mission?”

“I don’t know.”

The satellite transmitter beeped.

The upload had reached forty percent.

Logan sent one final warning.

WILLIAM WILL SINK THE SHIP BEFORE HE LETS THAT LIST OUT.

Gregory laughed bitterly.

“My father wouldn’t kill thousands of people.”

Ashlynn looked at him.

“He already threatened to.”

“He was bluffing.”

The cabin lights went dark.

Emergency lighting turned the honeymoon suite red.

A low alarm sounded through the corridor.

Then the ship’s engines changed pitch.

Ashlynn felt the vessel accelerate.

The cabin speaker activated.

William’s voice returned.

“You have five minutes to surrender the drive.”

Gregory stared at the dark ocean beyond the windows.

“What happens in five minutes?”

William answered calmly.

May you like

“We enter restricted naval waters.”

👉 The cruise ship was being steered toward an armed security zone where one false signal could trigger a catastrophic response.
