Colonel Harlan was removed from command pending review.

Two senior officers were reassigned.

A master chief retired suddenly.

Which, in military language, meant the door had been shown to him before someone kicked him through it.

And slowly, Camp Lejeune began to breathe again.

Three weeks later, I returned to Camp Lejeune to close out interviews.

The cafeteria smelled the same.

Burnt coffee.

Industrial eggs.

Floor wax.

But the air felt different.

Lighter.
