“Ma’am?”
“Yes?”
He hesitated.
“Were you really scared?”
I looked at him.
“Of Rodriguez?”
He nodded.
I thought about lying.
Making myself sound untouchable.
That would have been easy.
Instead, I told him the truth.
“Yes.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“But you dropped him.”
“I was still scared.”
He frowned, confused.
So I softened my voice.
“Courage isn’t not being scared,” I said. “Courage is deciding fear doesn’t get command authority.”
The Marine absorbed that like he might need it someday.
