He moved through the serving line slowly, making sure people saw him.

He slapped one Marine on the shoulder.

Called another “killer.”

Made a joke about soft boys needing lattes.

A few laughed too fast.

Fear often wears a grin in public.

I turned one page of my manual and took a sip of coffee.

Tank noticed me not noticing him.

That was all it took.

His boots stopped beside my table.

“Morning, sweetheart.”

I kept my eyes on the page.

“Morning.”

“I haven’t seen you around here before.”
