As he walked away, Lieutenant Emily Shaw entered the cafeteria.
She was back in uniform.
Shoulders straight.
Eyes steady.
She saw me and came over.
“I heard you’re leaving today,” she said.
“I am.”
She smiled a little.
“You caused a lot of paperwork.”
“That’s my love language.”
For the first time since I met her, she laughed.
Then her expression grew serious.
“I thought nobody would believe me.”
