Chapter 10 - The Video Nobody Expected
The guardianship hearing lasted eleven minutes before everything changed.
Rocky sat beside his attorneys.
Calm.
Expensive suit.
Confident.
His lawyer displayed a photograph of Emma sitting beside the dog bowl.
“Mr. Bennett became concerned about the child’s condition—”
Samuel stood.
“Your Honor, we request permission to play the complete source recording.”
Rocky turned sharply.
His attorney whispered:
“What recording?”
Samuel connected the file.
The screen lit up.
Emma walked into the dining room.
“Grandpa… I’m hungry.”
Rocky’s face drained.
The courtroom watched him pick up the bone.
Watched him throw it into the dog bowl.
“He said I’m not his granddaughter.”
Watched Maya enter.
Watched everything.
No one spoke when the video ended.
The judge looked at Rocky.
“Mr. Bennett, your petition alleges that this footage demonstrates neglect by the child’s mother.”
Rocky swallowed.
“My concern was—”
“You created the condition shown in the photograph.”
Rocky’s attorney touched his arm.
He stopped.
The guardianship petition was dismissed immediately.
The judge referred the video to child protective authorities and prosecutors for review.
Rocky’s access to Emma was suspended.
Outside court, he exploded.
“You set me up!”
Maya stared at him.
“You recorded yourself.”
“You left her with me!”
“Because you were her grandfather.”
His face twisted.
“She isn’t.”
Maya’s voice dropped.
“She is Luke’s daughter.”
“Luke wasn’t mine!”
There it was.
Reporters nearby heard it.
Rocky realized too late.
Cameras turned.
Questions erupted.
“Mr. Bennett, are you saying Luke Bennett wasn’t your biological son?”
“Did you know?”
“Is Emma connected to Thomas Avery?”
Rocky pushed through the crowd.
But the secret was out.
Not because Maya exposed him.
Because his rage did.
That evening, Claire called crying.
Peter—Luke’s childhood best friend—called.
Former family employees called.
People who had always wondered why Rocky treated Luke differently suddenly understood.
Maya hated the public spectacle.
Luke deserved dignity.
So she issued one short statement through Samuel.
Luke Bennett was a loving husband and father. His biological parentage does not change the life he lived or the family he built. Emma’s privacy will be protected.
That was all.
Rocky issued twelve paragraphs.
Accusations.
Denials.
Blame.
By morning, Avery Medical Systems’ board announced an independent review.
Then Samuel called.
“We found another payment.”
“To who?”
“The private investigator Rocky hired.”
“When?”
“Three days before Luke’s car accident.”
Maya stopped breathing.
The room went silent.
Samuel spoke carefully.
“This may mean nothing.”
Maya’s voice shook.
“What did Rocky hire him to do?”
