Chapter 7 - Why Rocky Hated Luke

Claire finally told Maya what childhood had really been like.

Luke had protected everyone.

Especially her.

Rocky could be charming in public.

At home, he was different.

Cold.

Critical.

Obsessed with obedience.

Luke learned early that arguing made things worse.

So he became easygoing.

Funny.

Helpful.

The son everybody loved.

Rocky hated that.

Because Luke grew into everything Rocky pretended to be.

Generous.

Patient.

Loved without demanding anything back.

Claire cried as she remembered.

“Dad used to say Luke wasn’t tough enough.”

Maya understood now.

Maybe Rocky had always known Luke might not be biologically his.

Maybe every independent thing Luke did reminded him.

When Luke rejected the family business and became a teacher, Rocky called him ungrateful.

When Luke married Maya instead of a woman Rocky approved, Rocky refused to speak to him for six months.

When Emma was born, Luke became softer.

Happier.

Rocky became colder.

Claire remembered one night after Emma’s first birthday.

“I heard Dad tell Mom’s picture that Luke had taken everything from him.”

Maya frowned.

“Taken what?”

“I thought he meant respect.”

Now she knew better.

Luke’s existence had forced Rocky to live with a choice he made decades earlier.

He had chosen to stay.

Chosen to be Luke’s father.

But instead of accepting responsibility for that choice, he turned it into a lifetime of resentment.

Then Thomas Avery died.

Rocky must have learned about the trust.

Suddenly Luke’s parentage threatened more than pride.

If Luke—or Emma—was recognized as Thomas’s family, everyone would discover Rocky wasn’t Luke’s biological father.

The great Bennett patriarch.

The man obsessed with blood.

The man who built his identity around being the head of a perfect family.

Rocky could not tolerate the humiliation.

So after Luke died, he began searching.

Private investigator.

Avery estate inquiry.

DNA testing.

He needed Emma excluded.

Maya thought of the dog bowl again.

That wasn’t a random cruelty.

Rocky had already convinced himself Emma was an invader.

A child carrying proof that his family had never belonged to him in the way he demanded.

Claire looked at Maya.

“What are you going to do?”

“Protect Emma.”

“And Dad?”

Maya’s voice was calm.

“He gets the truth.”

That afternoon, Samuel called.

The Avery trustees had approved formal genetic testing.

Thomas Avery’s preserved medical sample was available.

Luke’s preserved sample was available.

The comparison could finally answer everything.

Results would take ten days.

Rocky found out in two.

And the next morning, he showed up at Maya’s house with an offer.

Five million dollars.

Cash equivalent.

No taxes to Maya.

No litigation.

One condition.

Withdraw Emma’s claim to the Avery trust.
