Chapter 9 - The Real Inheritance

Thomas Avery had owned thirty-one percent of Avery Medical Systems when he died.

Most of it went into a foundation trust.

But twelve percent had been reserved.

For Luke.

Or Luke’s descendants.

Emma was the only one.

Current value:

Approximately one hundred and eighteen million dollars.

Maya nearly dropped the report.

“No.”

Samuel understood her reaction.

“This does not mean Emma receives cash tomorrow.”

“I don’t care.”

“The shares are protected until adulthood.”

“Good.”

“And voting authority sits with a guardian trustee.”

Maya looked up.

“Who?”

Samuel smiled faintly.

“You.”

Maya leaned back.

Rocky had spent months fighting over something even bigger than she knew.

But Samuel added another layer.

Thomas’s trust gave Emma’s guardian the right to request historical audits involving any party suspected of interfering with Thomas’s relationship to Luke.

That meant Rocky’s communications.

Private investigator payments.

Destruction of evidence.

Possible civil liability.

Rocky wasn’t merely afraid of embarrassment.

He was afraid of consequences.

Samuel filed the trust activation.

Within twenty-four hours, Rocky sued.

He claimed Maya manipulated the tests.

Claimed Luke was mentally unstable before death.

Claimed Eleanor’s letters were fabricated.

Then he did something uglier.

He petitioned for temporary guardianship review, arguing that Maya was exploiting Emma financially.

Maya read the filing twice.

“He’s trying to take my daughter.”

Samuel nodded grimly.

“Not likely to succeed.”

“But he filed it.”

“Yes.”

That was enough to terrify her.

Rocky’s attorney claimed Maya intentionally exposed Emma to media attention.

Maya had spoken to no reporters.

Claimed Maya had unstable housing.

She owned her home.

Claimed she had neglected Emma.

False.

Then Rocky submitted photographs.

Emma in dirty clothes.

Emma looking thin.

Emma sitting beside a dog bowl.

Maya stared at the images.

Her heart stopped.

Those photos had been taken at Rocky’s house.

The day he mistreated her.

He was using his own cruelty as evidence against Maya.

Samuel’s face hardened.

“This may be the worst mistake he has made.”

Rocky claimed the photographs proved Maya routinely delivered Emma in neglected condition.

But metadata told another story.

The images were taken by Rocky’s indoor security camera.

Time stamped.

Same day.

Same dining room.

And the full video still existed.

Maya whispered:

“There’s video?”

Samuel nodded.

“Rocky’s own lawyers produced it during discovery.”

They had apparently reviewed only selected still frames.

They did not realize the continuous file showed what happened before Maya arrived.

Emma asking for food.

Rocky throwing the bone.

Emma sitting beside the dog bowl.

Then Maya entering.

Samuel looked at her.

“We now have the entire incident.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

For weeks Rocky had controlled the story.

Now his own camera had preserved the truth.
