Chapter 3 - Eleanor’s Envelope

Eleanor Bennett had been dead for six years.

Cancer.

Fast.

Cruel.

Rocky rarely spoke about her.

Luke had adored her.

So had Maya.

Eleanor was warm where Rocky was rigid.

Quiet where he was controlling.

She had once told Maya:

“Rocky thinks family is something you own. Don’t ever let him teach you that.”

Maya hadn’t understood then.

Now she did.

The old test authorization led Maya to Dr. Aaron Mills, a retired genetic counselor who remembered Eleanor.

“She came alone,” he said.

“When?”

“Twenty-eight years ago.”

Maya’s heart jumped.

Luke had been nine.

Eleanor wanted to know whether Rocky was Luke’s biological father.

Maya gripped the edge of the chair.

“And?”

Aaron shook his head.

“I never saw the final result.”

“Why?”

“She canceled the disclosure appointment.”

“Did Rocky know?”

“I don’t believe so.”

Maya left with more questions than answers.

Then Aaron called her back.

“I remembered something.”

Eleanor had left a sealed envelope with the clinic.

If she died before retrieving it, the clinic was supposed to release it to Luke after his twenty-fifth birthday.

But the clinic changed ownership.

Records moved.

The envelope was never delivered.

Aaron found it in archived storage.

It was addressed simply:

FOR LUKE.

Maya stared at it for a long time.

Luke would never open it.

So his estate attorney petitioned for release.

Three days later, Maya sat in a conference room with the envelope in front of her.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My sweet boy,

If you are reading this, I did not find the courage to tell you myself.

Maya stopped.

Her hands trembled.

She kept reading.

Eleanor wrote that years before Luke was born, she and Rocky separated briefly.

Rocky had become cruel.

Controlling.

He had left home for months.

During that time Eleanor became close to another man.

A man who made her feel safe.

She became pregnant.

Rocky returned.

Begged her to reconcile.

And Eleanor allowed him to believe Luke was his.

Maya covered her mouth.

Then came the line that changed everything.

Rocky is not your biological father.

Below it was another name.

Thomas Avery.

Maya knew it.

Everyone in town did.

Thomas Avery had founded Avery Medical Systems.

A company worth hundreds of millions.

He had died two years earlier.

And according to public records—

he had no acknowledged children.

Maya looked at the letter again.

Eleanor had included one final warning.

Rocky knows there was another man.

He does not know who.

If he ever discovers the truth, I fear he will punish you for my mistake.

Maya closed her eyes.

Twenty-eight years later, Eleanor had been right.

Rocky wasn’t punishing Luke anymore.

May you like

Luke was dead.

So he was punishing Luke’s daughter instead.
