Chapter 5 - The Missing Box

Maya went back through Luke’s belongings.

Eleven months after his death, she still hadn’t opened everything.

Some boxes hurt too much.

One sat in the garage.

LUKE — MOM’S THINGS.

Maya had avoided it.

Now she opened it.

Photographs.

Recipe cards.

Eleanor’s old scarf.

A silver locket.

Then an empty space where something rectangular had once been.

The cardboard beneath was cleaner there.

Something had been removed recently.

Maya called Luke’s sister, Claire.

“Did you take anything from Mom’s box?”

“No.”

“Did Rocky?”

Silence.

“What?”

Claire lowered her voice.

“Dad came over after Luke’s funeral.”

“When?”

“Maybe two weeks later.”

“Why?”

“He said Luke had some of Mom’s private papers.”

Maya felt sick.

“Did he take them?”

“I don’t know.”

Maya checked her doorbell-camera archive.

Most footage had expired.

But Luke had subscribed to cloud backup.

She searched.

There it was.

Rocky entering the garage while Maya was at a grief counseling appointment.

He carried nothing in.

He carried a small wooden box out.

Maya sent the clip to Samuel.

Then she drove to Rocky’s house.

This was before the dog-bowl incident.

Before the slap.

Before everything exploded.

She confronted him in his study.

“What was in the box?”

Rocky didn’t look up.

“What box?”

Maya placed a still image on his desk.

His face changed.

“That belonged to Eleanor.”

“It belonged to Luke.”

“She was my wife.”

“And Luke was my husband.”

Rocky stood.

“You don’t understand the things you’re digging into.”

“Then explain them.”

His eyes hardened.

“Some truths destroy families.”

Maya stared at him.

“No. People destroy families.”

Rocky laughed bitterly.

“You think Luke would’ve wanted to know his whole life was based on a lie?”

“I think he deserved the choice.”

Rocky’s jaw tightened.

Maya noticed something in his hand.

A brass key.

Small.

Old.

He slipped it into his pocket.

“What did you do with the box?”

“Leave.”

“Rocky—”

“Get out of my house.”

Maya left.

But as she reached the hall, she heard Rocky open a locked cabinet.

She looked back.

Inside were papers.

Photographs.

And the corner of Eleanor’s wooden box.

Rocky saw her.

Slammed the cabinet shut.

The next day, Maya returned with an attorney.

The box was gone.

Rocky denied ever having it.

But he made one mistake.

He forgot the house had an old home-security system Eleanor installed years earlier.

And unlike the modern cameras—

that system backed up activity logs automatically.
