Chapter 11 - Evelyn’s Last Insurance Policy

Samuel insisted they make copies before opening anything.

One copy went to police.

One to his law office.

One to a forensic computer specialist.

Only then did they examine the drive.

There were six folders.

BANK RECORDS.

TRUST.

ROCKY.

LINDA.

EMMA.

And one titled:

IF I AM GONE.

Daniel clicked it.

A video appeared.

Evelyn sat in the same dining room where Emma had been humiliated.

She looked thin from illness.

But her eyes were clear.

“My name is Evelyn Carter. I am recording this voluntarily.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Maya reached for his hand.

Evelyn explained that she had discovered Rocky diverting company funds.

She confronted him.

He denied it.

Then she learned he had begun questioning Emma’s paternity.

“At first I believed he was being cruel,” Evelyn said.

“Then I understood why.”

She held up a draft trust.

“If Emma is Daniel’s biological child, these shares pass to her.”

Rocky knew that.

So he created doubt.

Evelyn described finding a printed template for a fake genetics report in Rocky’s study.

She photographed it.

The photographs were on the drive.

She also recorded a conversation with Rocky.

His voice filled the room.

“If Daniel doubts the girl long enough, the trust dies with you.”

Evelyn responded:

“You would destroy your own granddaughter for money?”

Rocky said:

“I’m protecting what I built.”

Maya felt tears burn behind her eyes.

Emma had been five years old when Rocky threw a bone into that bowl.

But he had begun trying to erase her before she could speak.

The recording continued.

Evelyn said:

“You didn’t build this alone.”

Rocky laughed.

“Try proving any of it after you’re dead.”

The audio ended.

Daniel stood so abruptly his chair fell backward.

He walked to the window.

Maya didn’t follow.

Some grief needs room.

Samuel closed the laptop.

“This is devastating evidence.”

“For the trust case?”

“For several things.”

Fraud.

Forgery.

Financial crimes.

Witness intimidation.

Potentially obstruction.

And now assault allegations.

Rocky’s world was collapsing under the weight of his own decisions.

Then the forensic specialist opened the EMMA folder.

Inside were scanned hospital records from Emma’s birth.

A note from Evelyn.

And a photograph.

Daniel leaned closer.

The photograph showed Rocky in a hospital corridor holding a specimen collection bag.

Maya’s breath stopped.

“How did she get that?”

Claire whispered, “Mom must have followed him.”

A timestamp showed it was taken the same week the original paternity test was supposedly ordered.

Daniel stared at his father’s image.

Then at the bag.

A patient label was visible.

But it didn’t say Emma Carter.

It carried another child’s name.

Samuel immediately called the detective.

Because now they knew exactly how Rocky had created the false DNA result.
